For more than 20 years, Dave Shannon has coached local youth teams and been part of groundbreaking efforts that have improved area soccer. He started coaching with Carroll Manor Athletic Association in 1997. In 2002, he coached the only Frederick Excel U8 boys team. Shannon was on the ground floor as Excel evolved into Frederick Alliance and ultimately FC Frederick, where he still coaches. In 2003, Shannon was FC Frederick's representative to the National Capital Soccer League and the following year was appointed to the Executive Committee.
Some of the groundbreaking changes in which Shannon either initiated or was an advocate included creating ScrimmageFest, moving NCSL UJ1 and Ul 2 soccer to 8v8 play, creating the first Small-Sided Shootout, managing the FC Frederick Friendlies, establishing the Middle School League, creating HexaLeague, and establishing Drop-In Elementary School League.
Most recently, he was part of the movement to roll Washington Area Girls Soccer League into NCSL in 20 I 6. In 2019 he was tasked to create a recreational soccer organization in the Golden Mile area of Frederick
